Things People Really Do in Thousand Oaks

A View From the Inside... Thousand Oaks

Thanks for visiting this site, an insider's view of Thousand Oaks, a small city in Ventura County, Southern California. If you are thinking about visiting or moving here, you have come to the right place to get the honest perspective of real folks who live here. Find out where locals eat, shop, the truth about the real estate market, and all the other stuff you won't find by visiting a big commercial website.

Why Do People Live in Thousand Oaks?

Thousand Oaks is nestled in the beautiful Santa Monica mountains along the 101 freeway about 45 minutes from Los Angeles, close enough to make it one of that city's most sought after bedroom communities. Thousand Oaks houses many famous Hollywood personalities who have opted for something slightly more rural than Beverly Hills.

Thousand Oaks proudly boats one of the lowest crime rates in the nation. Presumably this statistic does not include white collar crime, tax evasion, teenage drug abuse, and the other sins of decadent, white collar suburbia. One of the nations seediest scandals erupted in the Thousand Oaks suburb of Westlake Village when Denise Richards / Charlie Sheen / Heather Locklear / Richie Sambora found themselves quagmired in a tabloid quadrangle.

No matter. The hiking is great, teenagers drive trucks most grown men would kill for, and there is a store dedicated solely to selling balloons. Several high powered corporations make their home here, including Amgen and General Dynamics, which might explain some of those pickup trucks being given out like popsicles to the local children.

Thousand Oaks is a great place to eat on a midrange budget and has every franchise restaurant imaginable to keep its plump citizens in fine form, but here are a few lesser known gems:

Decadent, cheesy French food served by highly accented and actually friendly French people

Jack's
Technically in Westlake Village, Jack's has great atmosphere and a great place where locals go for lunch to get excellent sandwiches

Sookies
Delicious and affordable Korean food

Things No One Else Will Tell You:

Locals who want to save money drive to nearby Camarillo to see movies where prices can be almost 50% cheaper

Teenage sex and drug abuse are rampant in Thousand Oaks, so don't let the low crime statistic fool you if you are thinking about moving here to raise your children in paradise. Be prepared for the hard parenting required in any other American city.
